Set up PlentyLabs for Figma
The PlentyLabs plugin connects Figma to your PlentyLabs workspace. Use it to put your PlentyLabs assets on a Figma canvas, and to send your Figma designs back to PlentyLabs.
1. What the plugin does
- Place assets. Put images, videos, vectors and frames from your PlentyLabs library on the canvas. A PlentyLabs frame becomes a real Figma frame, and its images, text and shapes stay as separate layers.
- Place a whole board. Put a PlentyLabs board on the current Figma page. Cards keep their positions, sections become frames, and notes become text you can edit.
- Send designs to PlentyLabs. Send selected frames, groups or layers to your PlentyLabs library as PNG, JPG or SVG. A frame arrives in PlentyLabs as a frame, with its layers kept separate.
- Send a whole page. Send every visible layer on a Figma page to PlentyLabs as a new board, in the same layout.
- Update placed assets. Assets you placed are marked Linked. When the asset changes in PlentyLabs, you can update the layer in place.
2. What you need
- A PlentyLabs account that is a member of at least one workspace. You can sign up here.
- Figma, in the desktop app or in the browser.
- A Figma Design file. The plugin does not run in FigJam or Figma Slides files.
- An internet connection. The plugin connects only to
api.plentylabs.com.
3. Install the plugin
- Open a Design file in Figma.
- Open the Actions menu in the toolbar and go to Plugins & widgets.
- Search for PlentyLabs.
- Click PlentyLabs, then click Run.
You can also find the plugin on its page in the Figma Community and open it from there.
4. Connect your PlentyLabs account
The plugin uses a pairing code. You approve the code in your browser, so you never type your PlentyLabs password in Figma.
- In the plugin, click Connect PlentyLabs.
- The plugin shows a short code, and your browser opens the PlentyLabs approval page.
- If you are not signed in to PlentyLabs in that browser, sign in.
- Check that the code in the browser is the same as the code in the plugin.
- Click Approve.
- Go back to Figma. The plugin connects within a few seconds.
If the browser did not open, click Open the approval page again in the plugin. You can also go to app.plentylabs.com/device on any device and type the code. A code works for 15 minutes.
Only approve a code that you started from Figma yourself.
What the connection can do
- It can read every asset and board in every workspace you belong to.
- It can create assets as you. Uploads from Figma go to the workspace you pick in the plugin.
- It cannot open your account settings, your password, billing, or admin tools.
- It ends after a week without use. The plugin then asks you to connect again.
5. Use the plugin
The plugin has three tabs: Browse, Export and Settings. The workspace picker is next to the tabs.
Place assets from PlentyLabs
- Open Browse. Search by name, or filter by Frames, Images or Video. Pick a board to see only its assets.
- Click an asset to pick it. To pick several, hold ⌘ (Ctrl on Windows) and click.
- Click the place button. If nothing is selected in Figma, the asset goes in the middle of your view. If you selected a layer, the plugin fills that layer with the image.
To place a whole board, pick the board, then click Place this whole board on the page. The board goes to the right of what is already on the page, so nothing is covered.
Send designs to PlentyLabs
- Select the frames or layers you want to send.
- Open Export. Under Send, choose Selection or Whole page.
- Choose the Format (PNG, JPG or SVG) and the Scale (1x, 2x or 3x).
- To also put the export on a board, turn on Also place the export on a board and pick the board. Without a board, the export goes to your asset library.
- Click Send to PlentyLabs. Keep the plugin open until it finishes. If you close it, anything not yet sent is cancelled.
To send a frame as one flat image, turn off Keep frames as frames.
6. Disconnect
- Open the Settings tab in the plugin.
- Click Disconnect, then click Disconnect again to confirm.
This signs the plugin out and ends its session in PlentyLabs. To use the plugin again, connect again with a new code.
You can also remove the plugin's access from PlentyLabs. Open Settings, then Your account, and click Revoke next to the plugin under Connected apps. Do this if you lost the computer, or if the plugin says that it could not reach PlentyLabs to end the session.
7. Troubleshooting
“That code expired”
The code was not approved within 15 minutes. Click Get a new code and approve the new code.
“Not approved”
Someone clicked Deny on the approval page. Click Try again to get a new code.
“No connection to PlentyLabs”
Figma could not reach PlentyLabs. Check your internet connection and click Retry. Nothing is lost. If your company network blocks some sites, ask your IT team to allow api.plentylabs.com.
“PlentyLabs is not answering”
PlentyLabs sent an error. Wait a moment and click Retry. If it keeps happening, email us the error number.
“No workspace yet”
Your PlentyLabs account is not a member of a workspace. Create a workspace in PlentyLabs, or ask a workspace owner to invite you. Then click Check again.
“PlentyLabs does not recognise this build of the plugin”
Your copy of the plugin is out of date. Update it from the Figma plugin list and try again.
The plugin asks me to reconnect
Your connection ended, most often after a week without use or because it was revoked. Click Reconnect PlentyLabs and approve the new code. Your work is not affected.
I cannot find the plugin in my file
Make sure you have a Design file open. The plugin does not run in FigJam or Figma Slides. For other PlentyLabs apps, see the Support page.
